Disaster Relief Shelter Opens at Haven Ministries Homeless Shelter

Haven Ministries Homeless Shelter opened Friday, July 28 in response to citizens needing longer term shelter after the tornado that struck on Kent Island last week.  Starting on Monday, July 31, the Shelter will be open from 5 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. daily at its designated space at Kent Island United Methodist Church at 2739 Cox Neck Road in Chester.  Transportation services between the Shelter and the Resource Center at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Centerville will be provided for daytime services.  As the week progresses, Haven Ministries will assess the need and how long to remain open as a disaster relief shelter.

According to Krista Pettit, Executive Director of Haven Ministries, Inc., “Even though Haven Ministries has experienced damage to its Thrift Store from the tornado, we are still open and have items to help victims. We are extending ourselves to be a resource to the residents of Kent Island, regardless of the cost to our organization.”

Haven Ministries Resource Center is open during the day at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the Shelter is open in the evenings from 5 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. as needed for a disaster relief shelter during this time period. Anyone in need of shelter care, should contact Krista Pettit of Haven Ministries at 410-739-4363. Anyone needing food, clothing, household cleaning supplies, or hygiene products can see a Haven Ministries volunteer or staff member at the Red Cross Crisis Response Center at Matapeake Elementary School (through Thursday, August 3).
