Haven Ministries' Cold Weather Shelter: More Than Just a Refuge from the Cold

Updated: Nov 13, 2024

From October 1st to April 30th, Haven Ministries opens its doors, providing a warm, safe environment  to those in need: men, women, and children alike. But we do more than just offer a roof; we serve nourishing meals and provide crucial support for clothing, food, and other essentials to all our guests.

The evening begins at 6:00 pm, as clients check-in for an evening of respite. A hot dinner awaits, along with the comfort of a bed for the night. Though our formal program ends at 7:30 am, the struggles many of our friends face extend far beyond the shelter's hours.

For those without a home to call their own, the day brings new challenges. Where can they go? How can they access life's basic necessities? It's a constant battle, one that too often overshadows progress.

Peter Grim, Executive Director says “at Haven Ministries, we've long envisioned a solution – a Day Center where our guests could gain vital skills to transform their circumstances. We dreamed of a safe and welcoming space offering job training, budgeting classes, and more.”

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of The Jacob Sloan Foundation, that dream is now a reality. The JSF, committed to making a difference in the lives of children, families, and communities in need, has provided the funding necessary to renovate a space at The Shore Christian Fellowship Church located in Queenstown, Md for the ‘Jacob Sloan Day Center’. In addition we’d like to acknowledge Linette & Tim Miller who provided funding for the furnishings and equipment needed.

Mary Jourdak, Shelter & Housing Director says “programs and events at the day center are quickly taking shape. The Queen Anne’s County Public Library has scheduled mobile library stops and is providing a small permanent library collection.  This center will be so much more than just four walls. It will be a launching pad for change, a place of empowerment, community connection, and a testament to the belief that everyone deserves the chance to improve their situation.”

At Haven Ministries, we're not just a shelter. We're a stepping stone on the path to a brighter future and we’re pleased to share how we #LoveLikeJake at both our shelter and our Day Center.

The JSF Day Center will be open to shelter clients October - April. It will also be used year-round for programs and general community access through Haven Ministries and partner organizations.
